[edit] About Art in Tanzania Wiki
We have a lot of projects and a few locations, tons of information and many current, former and future volunteers. Since the shifting of people at Art in Tanzania is so normal, we have thought of this Wiki as a way of keeping everyone informed and share our information with other. Maybe this wiki gets expanded to other volunteering programs around the world and we manage to share more. Be that a dream or not, look around and if you can contribute with wisdom and information to our cause. Even from outside you can make a difference by helping us get better at what we are here to do. Help the people in Tanzania, learn from them and teach them what we know that can make their lives better. We hope we are doing that in the most compatible way with their life.
[edit] Dar es Salaam Projects
[edit] Bahari Art in Tanzania Nursery School
Project Summary The nursery is situated in Bahari, approximately 10 minutes walk from the Bahari voluntary house. Bahari Nursery was established in 2007 and caters for 30 children between the ages of 3 and 7 many of which are orphans or street children. Some of the children attending the school pay a small contribution towards the resources, however many can’t afford it so attend for free. There are 2 classrooms but at present only one is in use. The nursery has 1 qualified teacher who speaks Kiswahili and English. The school is owned by Art in Tanzania and has recently moved premises as the landlord wished to develop the land. Classes are now taught in the old volunteer house which is also our base for music and houses some of the staff.
Activities You will be teaching English and basic Math’s to the children and assisting the teacher with the planning of lessons. You will need to possess and apply practical skills such as designing and implementing work sheets and introducing new teaching techniques for writing and speaking. Teaching the children nursery rhymes and games as well as simply providing them with some attention and affection will also be included in your activities.
Schedule Working hours are from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 12pm with a break of 40 minutes in between when the children eat porridge and play.
Holidays: The centre has regular school holidays for the local teaching staff however it stays open for the children the whole year round.
Resources The school has recently been painted by volunteers however as many of the children cannot afford to pay to attend the school it is still lacking in basic resources such as teaching books, art and craft materials (crayons, coloured paper, pipe cleaners), reading books. Other useful materials include flash cards, stickers and also sports equipment; these will help you to give interactive and effective lessons during your time there.
Special Points We have recently added the numbers of kids to 75 and the school needs about 4 volunteers at a time.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Boko Nursery School
Boko Nursery is situated in Boko, a town about 2½ km from the Bahari Hotel. It is ran by Mr. Gideon, and is attended by many orphans and street children. Mr Gideon owns and funds the school and uses it to teach those who would otherwise receive no education. The school has been beautiful decorated by volunteers in October 2008. The school places more emphasis than most on making learning fun, children regularly learn songs which aid with their English lessons. There is one full time teacher who works along with Mr Gideon, however due to the vast age range in the classroom (2-8) the school needs our assistance. The teacher speaks a poor level of English and is not trained as a teacher so we try to show different methods of teaching other than just learning by repeating facts until they are remembered!
Getting There To get to the school you take a 35/40 minute walk then a 5 minute dala-dala ride. Although this is a long trip, every volunteer who has been to the school have assured us it’s worth it!
Resources As the school is totally non-profit making, resources are very tight. Despite this all pupils have books and the school has been freshly painted. Resources such as chalk, pens, pencils, art equipment and textbooks are always needed. The children love painting, and wall displays only improve the learning environment.
Schedule You are expected to be at the school at around 9am and you leave around 11.30am/12 noon.
Special Notes We try to send two volunteers at a time to this school due to the large class and the wide age range. This project is one of the most rewarding projects we run- the children are always fairly well behaved and eager to learn and due to their situations know the importance of education from an early age.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Garisco Day Care Center
Project Summary Garisco Day Care Centre is situated in Tegeta, a 35 minute walk from the Bahari hotel. The centre was established in 2006. There are 40 nursery children between the ages of 3 and 7 split into 2 groups with around 20 children in each group, they are however all located in 1 classroom. Many of the children attending the centre are either orphans or street children and many have issues with discipline and behavior. The centre has 1 qualified teacher, who also performs the role of headmaster, and 2 non-qualified classroom assistants who speak very limited English. The school was recently painted by volunteers and looks amazing!
Activities You will be supporting the classroom assistants in teaching basic English and Math’s to the nursery children, you will often be expected to teach the class on your own. As most of the children are orphans and street children, discipline can be a challenge. There is ongoing development at Garisco in the area of constructive lesson planning, interactive teaching and effective discipline which you will be expected to continue. There is also the possibility to teach the pre form one class more advanced English and Math’s, these youths are all very willing and enthusiastic to learn and to have your support.
Schedule You will be working from Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 12.00pm with a break of 40 minutes in between. Holidays: The centre has regular school holidays for the local teaching assistants however it stays open for the children the whole year round.
Resources The centre was recently painted and furnished by volunteers working there, however man y of the children attending the school are social orphans or street children and cannot pay the fees to attend and therefore attend for free, leaving the centre lacking in basic resources. Useful resources to bring with you would include wall charts (ABC, 123, Maps), art materials, coloured pencils and paper, children’s reading books, stickers, flash cards etc.
Special Points Teaching experience isn’t necessary to volunteer at Garisco Day Care however as many of the children have discipline issues, enthusiasm, patience and dedication is essential. Although the centre is small, due to the lack of qualified teaching staff and the discipline issues, we try to provide them with at least 2 volunteers at all times.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] St Rita Nursery School
Project Summary St. Rita pre-school is in Tegeta and is there to give children a decent level of education prior to starting primary school. It has around 35 students with an age range of 2-5. There is only one classroom which is split into two classes. The school is in very poor condition, but has recently been painted by volunteers. However it still needs some work on the actual building itself. There is wide variation of ability of the students as there is only one classroom, however all are taught basic maths and English. The school has no uniform and only a very small yard.
Getting There The school is a 40 minute walk from the Bahari Hotel, just around the corner from Garisco school. Schedule You will be required to teach between 8.30 and 10/11am, Monday to Friday. There are school holidays of one month in December and at one point in the middle of the year.
Resources The school has very limited resources. There is a small blackboard and a few chairs and desks,http://www.artintanzania.org/artintanwiki/skins/common/images/button_bold.png but all are in poor condition. Most children have an exercise book and pencil, but new stocks of these are always useful. There are very few textbooks and flashcards etc, but as the teaching is so basic it is possible to teach without these.
Teaching You will be required to teach basic English and Maths, but sports, music, arts and games are always beneficial to the students.
Special Notes We try to send two teachers to the school, although it is small because the children are often rowdy and the teachers can disappear for long periods. There are no educational requirements to teach in the school.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Jecaan Mission Nursery and Primary School
Project Summary Jecaan Mission was established in 2004 and is situated in the town of Tegeta which is a 30 minute walk from the Bahari hotel. The school has 65 students, most of which come from the nearby village of Tegeta. The ages of the pupils range between 4 and 8, some of the children are orphans and many of the remaining children come from very low income families. There are 5 classes with between 7 and 20 children in each class, however there are only 3 classrooms, 2 of the classrooms are separated by a small wooden partition. The school has 5 full time teaching staff, only one of which is qualified, the others are currently in training. As there is an extreme shortage of subsidised government run schools in Tanzania, Jecaan Mission is one of many privately run schools, pupils attending the school are requested to pay a set fee per trem, however many are not able to afford this so contribute what they can.
Activities All classes at Jecaan are taught in English, as a volunteer you will be involved in various acti vities including teaching English, Math’s, Science and Art and Craft, as well as playing games and singing. As the ages of the children varies so does the level of teaching, for example for the 4 year olds Math’s lessons involve 1+2= and English lessons involve the ABC, nursery rhymes etc; these lessons are usually done together with the teacher. For the older children Math’s involves fractions, multiplication, telling the time etc and English includes verbs, nouns, adjectives, plurals; you will often be teaching these classes on your own. As we aim to make our projects sustainable within the local community, you will also be expected to be proactive in educating the teachers in interactive ways of teaching and means of discipline involving positive reinforcement as apposed to corporal punishment.
Schedule Working hours are from Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 12.30pm with a break of 40 minutes in between when the children eat porridge and play. 11 You will be working alongside local teachers and the class that you teach will vary. The school holidays are as follows: • April 4 weeks • August 4 weeks • December 4 weeks
Resources The school is very basic but has the essential resources such as books and pens. Much of the money paid in school fees is ‘lost’ in administration so any materials and teaching resources that you can bring with you would be appreciated: useful materials include art materials, coloured pencils and paper, children’s reading books, stickers, flash cards, wall charts.
Special Points Teaching experience isn’t necessary to volunteer at Jecaan however the school has very few resources so creativity as well as enthusiasm to help the school and the children develop is important. Although all classes are taught in English, the level of English spoken by the teachers is very basic and the teaching methods and styles are often ineffective.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] One Nursery and Primary School
One Nursery and Primary was established in 2006. It is situated in Tegeta which is a a 30 minute walk from the Bahari house. The school has around 115 students, of which 32 are either orphans or street children, 4 of the children live with and are fed by one of the teachers, as they have nowhere else to go. The ages of the pupils range between 2 and 9 years, there are 3 classrooms at the school which the 5 different groups share, with between 10 and 30 children in each room. The school has 3 full time teachers and a headmistress. The school is one of the few in the area that accepts disabled and handicapped students, but even so there are none there at present. One Nursery and Primary is a privately run school, but over half of the children cannot afford to pay the small fee which is required to run the school. The headmaster does extra work outside of school to raise money to be able to keep the school open so he is there only about two days a week. One Nursery is working closely with Art In Tanzania for the building of a new school. The school will be of an international standard, thanks to the generosity of past volunteers. Despite this, the school will still take students from mainly poor backgrounds. This is a very exciting time for the school, and is a testament to the good work of the teaching staff.
Activities All classes are taught in English, as a volunteer you will be involved in various activities including teaching English, Math’s, Science, Art and Sport as well as playing games and singing. As the ages of the children varies so does the level of teaching, for all subjects you will be given a guideline from the teacher of what to teach. Because the school has 5 classes but only 3 teachers, sometimes you will be assisting the teacher with their lesson but you will also be expected to teach on your own. As we aim to make our projects sustainable within the local community, you can also be proactive in educating the teachers in interactive ways of teaching and means of discipline involving positive reinforcement as apposed to corporal punishment. Teaching experience isn’t necessary to volunteer at One Nursery and Primary however the school has very few resources so creativity as well as enthusiasm to help the school and the children develop is important.
Schedule Working hours are from Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 1pm with a break of 40 minutes in between when the children eat porridge and play. You will be working alongside local teachers and the class that you teach will vary. The school holidays are as follows: • Easter 1 week • June 1 month • September 1 week • Dec 1 month
Resources The school has recently been painted and new desks have been provided by one of the volunteers through fund raising efforts, however it is still very basic and is lacking the essential resources such as books and pens. Useful resources to bring with you would include wall charts (ABC, 123, Maps), art materials, colored pencils and paper, children’s reading books, stickers, flash cards.
Special Points One Nursery and Primary School is a small school but due to their lack of teaching staff we try to provide them with 2 volunteers at all times.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Pwani Primary School
Pwani Primary School is situated 10 minutes walk from the Bahari volunteer house. The school was established in 1997 and currently has 1714 students between the ages of 7 and 14 years. Pwani is a government run school which means that the children effectively attend for free, however the government don’t invest highly in schools so they are lacking in basic resources; there are only 15 classrooms at the schools which means that each class has over 100 children. Although all of the children are very enthusiastic to learn, teaching to such large number can be challenging.
Activities You will be responsible for teaching English language to the various age groups. If you are able to assist with computer skills, sports or French, any extra time you can give would be very welcome. Schedule The school is open from Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 2.00pm but you will receive a timetable of the lessons that you will teach.
Holidays: 2 weeks in March for Easter Mid June to Mid July 2 weeks at the end of September December for 1 month
Resources The school is lacking in basic resources and teaching materials are extremely limited. Books and resources to teach English as a foreign language would be welcome to help prepare and give interactive lessons.
Special Points Volunteers at this project will need to be prepared to teach over 100 children in a class. Lesson planning is essential as is enthusiasm and the confidence to discipline a large group.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Ununio Primary School
Ununio primary school is situated in the small fishing village of Ununio, around 3km from the Bahari hotel. The school was founded in 1967, however it is recently renovated. Even so, the school is very plain and undecorated. The school is attended by local children of the area and has around 700 students, some of whom attend the Ununio Orphanage, about 500m north of the school. As the school is a government school, attendance is essentially free, so you will encounter children from all backgrounds. As it is owned by the government, there are few resources and classes often have more than 100 students. Ages range from 3-18.
Getting there You will be taken there by a free car as there is no public transport to the area, although we are currently looking into getting bicycles to access the project. Resources The school has plenty of desks, chalk and exercise books, however aside from that it has very few teaching resources. You may find it useful to make some flashcards or wall displays of work to make a better learning environment. There is some basic sports equipment.
Teaching You will be required to teach English to a variety of classes (as all other subjects are taught in Swahili), from Standard (year) 1 up to Standard 7. The level of English ability is varied, but generally by Standard 7 students have a decent vocabulary and sentence structure. Before starting at the school we can meet with a teacher to create a timetable of lessons, to maximize your impact in the school. The school is also very keen to develop some structured sports lessons, which you may choose to run. They are currently looking at getting a pool table and to set up some football and netball classes, with the possibility of setting up a team.
Schedule The school operates between 8am and 2pm, although most volunteers choose to finish around 11 or 12 to be back for lunch and preparation for afternoon projects.
Special Notes There are no educational requirements to teach in the school. The school uses the stick as a method of discipline, so be prepared to use and demonstrate alternative methods of discipline. You will generally be assigned a class with another volunteer, however you can also teach alone if yo u wish. As the school is a registered one, it is suitable for internships for trainee teachers, many of whom find it useful teaching in such a different environment as in the west. Ununio school usually gets around 2 or 3 volunteers at a time. You can make a huge difference in this school, as the standard of the English of students and even teachers is very low.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Jiwe Gumu Primary School
Jiwe Gumu school is situated in the village of Mtongwani, around 2Ωkm from the Bahari hotel. It is a small school, with around 65 students, split into two classes, one taught indoors the other outside the school. The school is funded by the headmaster Teacher Kennedy and takes in orphans and street children free of charge. It has few resources and the school is very badly located – it’s in an area prone to flooding. The teachers are not fully qualified and therefore need your help. They are very welcoming and always delighted to receive volunteers. The children love to receive volunteers and every time a new teacher visits, run outside to greet them. The school has recently been beautifully painted by volunteers.
Getting There You will need to take a short dala dala ride to Mtongwani, once getting off the dala dala you will take a short 5 minute walk to the school.
Resources The school has one class room which has fairly new tables and chairs built by past volunteers. The school has two blackboards, the one used for the outside classroom is in poor condition and regularly breaks. Most children have books and pencils, but extra resources are always useful.
The Project School starts at 10:30 as before this they have Swahili first in the mornings. They generally need volunteers to teach English and Maths, teaching is fairly basic at the school as many of the children are at Nursery level.
Special Notes We to send at least two volunteers to this school as the classes can sometimes be quite large. If we have enough volunteers we send four and put two volunteers to each of the classes.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Computer Classes
Project Summary Art in Tanzania is providing computer training services for children, youth and adults. The task is to train the people for the common computer use as well as to use the internet and email. The means to communicate is a multi positive task as one will learn to get her/his products known, will be able to communicate and change views developing the democracy among others.
Activities We train local societies to use the computer starting from the very basics how to handle the computer, how to install software, how to open an email address and thereon teachng to use the most common software as word editing and calculation programs. Thereon we can produce web sites for local entities and businesses to promote their production and tasks.
Schedule The program takes place from Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm daily. We are also having evening classes for adult groups. Resources We are in process to make a new input for the computer-teaching program and on January 2008 we have many computers and a class room of its own only for the computer teaching program.
Special Points Some 5 volunteers/interns can attend at a time and the project can be tailored according the skills and preferences of the participant.
[edit] Marketing & Economics & Fund Raising
Project Summary Art in Tanzania is an NGO that is run in self-sustainable bases. The visiting volunteers and interns will leave some moneys to fund the projects but on top of that we run safari and adventure operations for fund raising. These operations need marketing efforts as well as constant development in performance. Also accounting and budgeting tasks are needed.
Activities The task is to train the local staff to perform and to develop the marketing and economical tasks. We are able to tailor the programs, for example one can attend project fund raising activities, internet based marketing, to develop exhibition stands, to design brochures and web sites and finally we can tailor the task according to the challenge of the volunteer/intern.
Schedule The program takes place from Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm daily.
Resources We have good facilitation in our offices as well as capabilities to produce marketing materials and designing in our music studio and in field of video making and photographing as well. We have also various side projects as our music production and bands that need marketing efforts locally and overseas. Special Points Some 5 volunteers/interns can attend at a time and the project can be tailored according the skills and preferences of the participant.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Kwetu High School (Secondary)
Kwetu High School is situated near Kunduchi beach resort in the village of Mtongwani. It is a large school, of around 700 pupils. There are 5 classes, each with more than 100 students. There are 3 classrooms, so the remaining two classes are taught outside each day. The school is privately run but the vast majority of itís students are orphans and street children. In Tanzania there are some orphanages and primary schools for children in similar situations, but there are precious few high schools that accept people free of charge. The school runs mainly on sponsorship and donations from charities and individuals. The school has a very strong identity and the students are proud to attend it. There is very good structure to the school day and few discipline problems compared to other similar schools.
Getting There The school is around 3km from the Bahari Hotel and is a 40 minutes walk or a 5- minute 200tsh($0.20) dala-dala (bus) ride and a five minute walk.
Resources The school has enough books and stationary for the students, but as with most schools there are very few textbooks. The teaching staff has done their best to make a good learning environment with the resources they have. The Teaching You will be required to teach English to the 5 classes, usually in one-hour lessons. You will agree a timetable with the teachers there and generally work around that. If you have any knowledge in another subject the school would also be delighted to welcome you. The school is also very interested in setting up football and netball teams and volunteers were recently shown on Tanzanian television after a netball coaching session. Additionally HIV Awareness volunteers are always welcomed to give seminars here.
Schedule The school day runs from 8am until 2pm with around an hours break. Volunteers are allowed to start at around 9am and can leave at around 12 or 1 if they wish so as to be back in time for lunch. Holidays are generally for one month in December and June.
Special Notes We try to place at least two volunteers in this school at all times, so one can teach English while the other teaches sports, however the teachers assure us that anyone wanting to help out is always welcome.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Medical Projects
Project Summary Art in Tanzania medical projects are located to the main hospitasl in Dar es Salaam including Muhimbili Universtity Hospital, Ilala, Manyamala and other large city hospitals. Tanzania is lacking medical personnel in the hospitals so all the medical professionals are most welcome to participate. We tailor all the medical projects.
Activities Depending on your level of knowledge and professional qualifications, your duties will include; taking patient history, checking vital signs, assisting in the laboratory, observation of surgery, assisting in the MCH with deliveries, theatre and the treatment of children and infants. At the beginning of each day cases will be presented and you will be expected to advise on which treatment or course of action would be taken in your country for each case. It will then be explained what course of action can/will be taken in each case due to the limited resources at the hospital.
Schedule You will be expected to work Monday to Friday from 8am - 2pm, you are more than welcome to work later if you wish and also at the weekend. Your commitment is essential for the development of the hospital.
Resources You will need to arrange your own insurance to be able to practice medically. You may also want to bring your own equipment such as a stethoscope although this is not essential.
Special Points This project is strictly for medical professionals and medical students only. Before you arrive: You will need to provide us with a full CV including areas of study and experience 1 month before you arrive. It will be useful to research: Western treatments for the cases that you will face. The challenges facing the medical sector in Africa
To be prepared to answer questions on yourself: • What you are studying/What you do for work. • What you hope to gain by volunteering here. • Your professional plans for the future
This will help raise the awareness and knowledge of the local staff in the hospital of the medical sector in developed countries. Through this mutual cooperation, the hospital will be able to develop it's knowledge in treatment and counseling methods and you will be able to develop your awareness of the problems and limitations facing the medical sector in Africa and raise awareness of this when you return to your country.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Adult English Bahari Beach
Project Summary Bahari Adult English class is located in the grounds of Bahari Nursery, a ten minute walk from the hotel. There are 2 groups, one at basic level and one at a more advanced level; each group has between 10 and 20 students between the ages of 15 and 40. The students are all members of the local community wanting to learn or improve their English to give themselves and their families a better chance for the future. Amongst the students are staff working at the volunteer houses, local bike taxi drivers, mothers and a number of local Maasai. Many of the students who attend this class have little or no formal education and therefore patience and you time is very much appreciated.
Activities You will be teaching English as a foreign language at either basic or intermediate level. The students like to concentrate on spoken English but correct grammar is also important to them. The students also find it interesting to learn about a variety of subjects from geography to culture to politics in the process of learning English. You will need to be organized and be able to prepare interactive lessons; your commitment, dedication and enthusiasm will be of great value to students who are very keen and grateful to learn what they can from you.
Schedule The classes are Monday to Friday from 3pm to 5pm. The classes do not stop for holidays.
Resources This project is run entirely by volunteers and is free to attend so there are very few resources. The classes take place outside in the courtyard of the nursery school, previous volunteers have bought blackboards and chairs but other than this there are no resources. The students usually bring their own exercise books and pens but you 24 will need to provide your own teaching aids and material. The Internet is an excellent source for ideas for lesson plans and for worksheets and articles. A knowledge of and material on general English grammar is also important.
Volunteers Notes:
Special Points
As this project is entirely run by volunteers it is essential that we
[edit] Adult English Ununio Village
Ununio adult English class is taught in Ununio Primary School, about 3km from the Bahari hotel. Ununio is a poor fishing village, with high unemployment and generally low levels of education. . There are currently two classes - basic and advanced, with even the basic English class speaking a decent standard of English. There are around 15-20 students in the basic class and about 5-10 attending the advanced class. This is a very new project, started in January 2009. As numbers are currently quite low, you might want to further advertise this class.
Getting there You will be taken there by a free car as there is no public transport to the area, although we are currently looking into getting bicycles to access the project.
Resources As the classes are taught in a primary school, there are plenty of desks and a whiteboard with chalk. However there are no resources such as textbooks or flashcards as the class is run entirely by Art in Tanzania. You will find however that you don’t really need many resources as long as you are enthusiastic and use your initiative.
The Students As this is such a new class, the students are very enthusiastic and friendly. The chances are you will make some very good friends from the class.
The Teaching Students learn the essentials of English, such as grammar, tenses and vocabulary. However many students are not very confident, so it is helpful to do lots of speaking exercises and debates. They also enjoy word games such as hangman and dictionary - these games also help develop their vocabulary.
Schedule Classes are taught Monday to Friday between 3pm and 5pm. They are taught throughout the year, with a one or two week break over Christmas and an optional 3 day break over Easter
Special Notes The teaching requires no experience, only a boatload of enthusiasm! You will generally be teaching a class alone, with another volunteer teaching the other class. However if you want to produce a play, or have a big debate etc, classes can be combined.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Mwandaliwa Orphanage
This Ununio Orphanage is situated about 3km from the hotel in the fishing village of Ununio. There are currently 65 children resident between the ages of 2 and 16. It is ran by a mother and her son, neither of whom are entirely proficient at English. There are always problems with funding to cover school fees, clothes, food and medical care, so you could look at setting up a link with a charity to support them. The children are from varying backgrounds, some have problems with HIV/Aids, disabilities or sight or hearing issues. The project receives some help from some Ununio residents, but this is mainly to wash clothes or prepare food. You will be required to be entirely flexible as there is so much that you can do! Volunteers can run sports classes, English courses, games, music programs and sports along with occasional HIV awareness seminars.
Getting There You will share a car with volunteers teaching at the Ununio adult English project. Resources There are 4 bedrooms, each with around 5 or 6 beds and mosquito nets. The orphanage has not been decorated as any funds are usually spent on food, rent or healthcare- you may wish to supply posters for rooms etc. There are no real teaching resources- classes are usually taught sat on a mat in the grounds. However you can use some of the basic resources such as sports equipment and stationary that Art in Tanzania can sometimes provide.
Schedule Volunteers are welcome at this project 365 days a year. At present we run this project in the afternoons between 3pm and 5pm as the children are at school in the mornings. The Projects Volunteers at the orphanage usually decide between them the program for the week- they set days for sports coaching, English lessons etc. The children are always just grateful for the company we provide- there is very little for them to do in their spare time.
Special Notes We usually send at least two volunteers to this project, it really is the more the merrier though as there so many children and so few staff, There is no educational requirements.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] HIV Awareness Program
Project Summary The HIV Awareness Program is run by Art in Tanzania and the goal is to educate and support the local communities regarding health and social matters. The program involves visiting small and remote villages in the local area to provide information and advice about HIV and AIDS, about its cause, effects, prevention, medication, treatment, nutrition, social stigma etc. to groups of youths and adults, the size of the group varies from village to village. The program takes between 3 to 5 days to complete. A member of staff will always be present to translate and support you. As the program involves visiting a different village every 3 to 5 days, the location of course varies. You will travel to the villages by daladala and on foot.
Activities You will be providing information and advice on HIV and AIDS as well as listening to and answering questions from the participants. It is important that you have an understanding of the causes, transmission, effects and treatments for HIV and AIDS and are comfortable discussing this in an open and honest environment.
Schedule The program takes place from Monday to Friday from 3pm to 5pm but can also be run as a morning project.
Resources There are no resources necessary for this project, just your commitment and dedication.
Special Points As it is important to be able to provide proficient information and answer any questions effectively, the program is only appropriate for volunteers willing to commit to it for a minimum of 1 month. We can place up to 3 volunteers on this project at one time.
[edit] Football Coaching
Project Summary The sports coaching takes place in Kondo, a village about 15 minutes walk from the Bahari hotel. There is a football team already set up thanks to the support of a local businesswoman and we’re planning to set up a netball team as well. The sessions are coached by volunteers only. Activities The program involves organizing and teaching drills and matches and encouraging teamwork and discipline. The children are enthusiastic to participate in any activities so creativity is an advantage. You will need to be energetic and also be patient and commanding enough to control large groups of children. You could also arrange matches against other local schools and teams.
Schedule The program takes place from Monday to Friday from 3pm to 5pm.
Resources The project already has 2 footballs and some basic kit.
Special Points We can place up to 4 volunteers on this project at one time.
Volunteers Notes:
[edit] Art in Tanzania Women Groups

[edit] Environmental & Health
Project Summary CSHEP is a sanitation based school study where the goal is to; increase the current level of sanitation in twenty government primary schools across the three wards in Watoto Salama’s spatial scope: Mbweni, Bunju and Kunduchi. CSHEP intends on achieving this goal by increasing the number of toilets in each school to meet council regulations and gaining access to a reliable year-round source of safe water. This project is designed to help Tanzanian communities to get on track with the Millennium Develop Goals produced by the UN in 2003.
Activities You will participate in data-collecting meetings with representatives from each school and help compile this data into the project’s database. In these meetings you will find out how many students are in each school, the number of toilets they currently have and their current accessibility to safe-water. You will also need to openly discuss with them how they think they can best access this water. There are a large range of other tasks including fund-raising meetings, report writing and budget analysis that you will be assigned to where necessary.
Schedule The program takes place from Monday to Friday but won’t necessarily have set hours. Generally it is a classic 9-5 but there may be the odd ‘meeting’ at the local bar at night.
Resources Any computer programs you can bring will most likely be useful. For example in this project we have already used: basic Microsoft Office programs, Gantt Project 2.0.4, an Arc View GIS program and Google Earth.
Special Points This has the potential to transform into a large-scale project with a lot of obstacles to overcome so patience, diplomacy and creativity is a must. You must be motivated and be able to walk independently. Any sanitation knowledge would be a plus. Also a good knowledge of computers or the ability to acquire this knowledge is necessary. In short, you can’t be afraid to try something new on the screen in front of you!

[edit] Arusha Projects
[edit] Bethlehem Day Care Centre
Project Summary This nursery was built in 2003 and caters for 20 children between the ages of 2 and 5. Four of the children at the school are orphans and the rest come from low income families. There is 1 classroom and 2 teachers and they try to teach the children in 2 groups according to age with the eight 2 and 3 year olds in one group and the twelve 4 to 5 year olds in another. There are 2 teachers at the school. The school is situated a 40 minute walk away from the volunteer house.
Activities You will be assisting the teachers with basic nursery teaching; ABC, 123, plus introducing games, arts, crafts and songs to the children. You will also be responsible for the general care of the children; disciplining them, giving them attention and affection. The staff hope to gain experience in handling children from observing and working with volunteers.
Schedule The school is open from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 12pm. The school closes for holidays in December for 1 month, April for 1 month and August for 1 month.
Resources The school is lacking relatively well equipped but anything that you can provide that will aid teaching such as teaching books, art and craft materials, reading books, flash cards etc are needed and will prove useful to you during your time at the project.
Special points Teaching in Tanzania is a well respected profession, many teachers often go without pay in their dedication to provide underprivileged children with an education, so your hard work and dedication is extremely appreciated. It is the culture to dress appropriately (especially if you will be teaching during Ramadan). Try not to wear revealing clothing whilst at work. It is possible to place a maximum of 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
[edit] Faraja Orphanage and Nursery School
Project Summary This centre was started in 2006 by Mr. Mbughi who was himself orphaned as a child and wanted to provide a better life for children in the same situation. Faraja caters for 40 children on a day care basis, providing them with food and shelter, 11 of those receive 24 hour care. The centre also runs a nursery school in one of its rooms for 12 children between the ages of 4 and 7. The nursery has a full time teacher who’s English is limited but who is enthusiastic and helpful. Faraja is located a 45 minute walk from the volunteer house. Due to the language this project can prove challenging but also very rewarding.
Activities Your role will be to teach and to assist the teacher in the nursery school. There is also the opportunity to help the older children with their homework in the afternoons and to teach the staff about childcare and nurturing the children should you wish. Of course the children at this project are also in need of some love and affection and playing games, singing and doing sport with them can provide them with some of the attention they need.
Schedule The nursery school is from 8.00am until 12pm but any extra time that you can provide in the afternoon would be greatly appreciated. The school takes holidays in April for 1 month, August for 1 month and December for 1 month.
Resources The orphanage is free, there is a small fee to attend the school but since the school opened only one child has paid. Mr. Mbughi relies on his own funds at the moment but is in need of sponsorship to be able to provide the children with the food and other resources that they need. The school is also lacking in materials so stationary or other teaching aids that you can provide will be very welcome.
Special points It is possible to place a maximum of 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
[edit] Glory Nursery
Project Summary This school was founded in 2003 and is situated about a 15 minute walk away from the Arusha voluntary house. This is an incredibly poor school and is in desperate need of attention, the school has 33 children between the ages of 3 and 6 years, 7 of which are orphans, the rest of which come from difficult backgrounds. There is 1 small classroom and 1 teacher who’s English is limited but who’s enthusiasm is endless. Volunteers should be prepared to work in conditions where there are no resources or equipment for teachers or for the children. This project would suit someone who is confident and motivated enough to make a change to the education system at the school; volunteers should have a genuine love of children and young people as well as the energy and enthusiasm to help these children.
Activities You will be helping to teach basic English, Math’s, Sports, Games and singing. As well as teaching you will also be able to provide the children with the attention and affection that they need and deserve.
Schedule School begins at 8.00 am and finishes at 11.30 am but any extra time that you can provide the school and the children would be greatly appreciated. The school takes holidays in March for 1 month, July for 1 month and December for 1 month.
Resources More than half of the 33 children cannot afford to pay the 2,500Tsh per month fees and the rest of the children pay what they can; as a result the school is seriously lacking in basic resources. The school needs, books, pens, reading books, wall displays, games, flash cards. Anything that you can provide for this school would be more than appreciated. The school doesn’t have any equipment so you will need to provide your own teaching aids.
Special points As the majority of the children cannot afford the school fees live there is not enough money to pay the teacher or to provide the children with porridge every day. Despite this the teacher and the children are incredibly enthusiastic and loving. It is possible to place a maximum of 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
[edit] Good Hope Nursery School
Project Summary Good Hope Nursery is located in the back room of a church a 20 minute walk away from the Arusha voluntary house. There are 19 children between the ages of 3 and 6 attending the school, 4 of which are orphans, the others also come from difficult backgrounds. There is 1 classroom and 1 teacher who’s English is limited. This is a private nursery however only half of the children can afford the fees to attend, despite this the school is reasonably well equipped but they still need the support of volunteers to help strengthen the children’s education.
Activities You will be teaching basic English, Math’s, Arts, Sports, Games and singing. The teacher is also in need of English lessons and would much appreciate your help with this. As well as teaching you will also be able to provide the children with the attention and affection. Schedule School begins at 8.00am and finishes at 12pm. The school takes holidays at Easter for 2 weeks, in June 1 month, September 1 week and December for 1 month.
Resources Teaching aids, wall charts, reading books, flash cards, art and sports material will help you to create and give interactive lessons while you are at the school. Because only half of the children are able to pay the fees, there is not enough money to provide the children with their daily porridge.
Special points It is possible to place a maximum of 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.

Twenty five of the children are orphans, the remaining children also come from difficult home circumstances. There is 1 classroom and 1 teacher, plus a teaching assistant. There is not enough room in the classroom for desks so the children sit on the floor, with the help of volunteers this large group of children can be split into smaller groups to aid learning and to give them some of the one on one attention that they need. The school is situated a 30 minute walk away from the volunteer house.
Activities You will be assisting the teacher with basic English and Math’s plus games, singing and sports, the class is often split into smaller groups providing you with the opportunity to give the children some extra attention and affection. The teacher is interested to learn new techniques regarding interactive learning and alternative methods of discipline.
Schedule The school is open from Monday to Friday, 8am to 12pm. The school closes for holidays in December for 1 month, April for 1 month and August for 1 month.
Resources This is a private kindergarten but of the 52 children only 8 can afford the 3,000Tsh per month to attend, the rest attend for free and as a result the school is lacking in basic resources such as books and pencils. Previous volunteers have made excellent wall displays but any teaching aids such as reading books, art and craft materials, flash cards etc will prove useful to you during your time at the project and will be used by the teacher after you leave.
[edit] Nursery Teaching and HIV Counseling
Project Summary TUPO is the acronym for Tumaini (Hope in Kiswahili language) Positive test centre and is a centre entirely dedicated to those who are HIV positive. The centre consists of nursery school catering for 40 children between the ages of 4 and 6 ½ , all of which are orphans and a quarter of which are infected with the HIV virus. The nursery has 2 classrooms with 20 four and five year olds in one and the 20 older children in the other class. There is 1 teacher and 1 assistant so the school needs volunteers to help offer better pre school education to these disadvantaged children. The school and the centre are a 35 minute walk from the volunteer house. As well as the nursery school, TUPO also performs home visits to members of their community infected with HIV to provide them with food and encouragement to work together to overcome the stigma attached to HIV. They also run a support group to educate those with infected with HIV about using condoms to prevent the spread about nutrition, balanced diet and medication and generally how to care for themselves to prevent HIV developing into AIDS. They also offer group counseling for those who have recently discovered that they are infected and provide an opportunity to share their experiences and fears and gain advice and hope from those who’ve been infected with HIV for a long time. In an attempt to educate the community about HIV and to show them that living with HIV can mean a full and healthy life, TUPO also has a football team where all the players are HIV positive. As football matches attract a lot of youth interest, these events allow TUPO to reach a wide audience. Along the football team they have a choir that visits local churches creating awareness.
Activities You will be expected to help in the nursery with teaching and assisting with basic English and Math’s as well as arts, playing, drawing, games, singing etc. You will also have the opportunity to assist with the home visits, participate in the support groups, coach football and join with the choir.
Schedule The nursery is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 12.30pm. The school closes for holidays for 1 in April, August and December. On Thursdays the whole day is spent doing home visits, visiting members of the group and also ones who are sick. Football coaching on a Tuesday and a Friday from 2-4pm and the is a match once a month.
Resources The centre and the school are run from donations and sponsorship but resources such as basic art and craft materials (crayons, coloured paper, pipe cleaners etc), flash cards and other teaching aids will help to make the lessons more creative and interactive. They also need basic first aid equipment and a football.
Special points All of the people working at the centre are infected by HIV. Volunteers at this project should have a thorough understanding about the cause, effects and spread of HIV and AIDS. They need to be knowledgeable and comfortable in discussing and advising people in HIV and AIDS related matters. It is possible to place 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
[edit] WEMA Day Care centre and HIV counseling
Project Summary This centre was started in June 2007 by a volunteer, previous to this the children were being taught outside under a tree. The centre now houses a nursery and a HIV clinic and also offers HIV counseling and advice in the local area. The nursery caters for 52 children between the ages of 3 and 5, these are split into 2 classes with 17 three to four year olds in one class and 35 four to five year olds in another. This is a private nursery but the majority of the children don’t pay as they are orphans or from difficult situations or the parents have HIV and cannot afford the fees. Due to this the centre is seriously lacking in resources, they only have 1 teacher for 2 classes and the classrooms have no furniture or basic resources. The centre is a 20 minute daladala ride and a 30 minute walk from the volunteer house. The centre also provides HIV and AIDS counseling. They do this as home visits and try to educate those already infected with the disease about use of condoms to stop them spreading it to others, to inform them about necessary nutrition to stay healthy, to discuss the behaviour and stigma attached to having the disease. During this counseling they can also asses those who are in need of medication and advise them to attend the clinic at the centre for treatment.
Activities The centre desperately needs volunteers to help in the day care centre. You will be teaching English and Math’s at a very basic level e.g. ABC, 123, as well as helping the children to learn through singing, games, nursery rhymes and drawing. The children are also simply in need of some attention and affection. In the afternoons it is possible to accompany the staff on home visit or observe and help in the clinic at the centre.
Schedule The school is open from 8am to 11.30am, Monday to Friday but any extra time that you are willing to provide will be greatly appreciated. It closes for 1 month holidays in December and June and 1 week holiday in March and September. Home visits take place in the afternoon but are not possible every day due to lack of staff resource and transport. The clinic is open from Monday to Friday for advice and treatment and rceives about 6-10 patients per day.
Resources Both the school and the clinic are desperately lacking in resources. The nursery needs the most basic of resources such as books, pencils, crayons and paper as well as teaching aids, wall charts, reading books etc. The clinic is also in need of any medical supplies that can be donated; from condoms and surgical gloves to ARV treatments.
Special points Volunteers at this project should have a thorough understanding about the cause, effects and spread of HIV and AIDS. They need to be knowledgeable and comfortable in discussing and advising people in HIV and AIDS related matters. It is possible to place 2-3 volunteers at this placement at one time.
[edit] Primary Teaching
Project Summary Naasha Junior Academy was established in 1996 with just a handful of and 1 teacher. It now has over 425 students, 15 classrooms and 22 teaching staff. The age of the children varies from 4 to 14 years old; there are 2 preschool classes with children between the ages of 4 and 6. There is a Standard 1 class, a Std. 2 class and 2 classes each of Std. 3,4,5, and 6. The school tried to split the classes so that there are no more than 35 children in a class. As there are not enough government Primary schools in Tanzania, Naasha was established as a private school where children have to pay to attend. As some of the children are orphaned and many come from single parent families, they often cannot afford the school fees and the school is left lacking in resources. The school is a 20 minute walk from the volunteer house. Activities You will be teaching English and Math’s to all age groups and any time and knowledge that you would like to give to teach French, Science, Sports and Arts would be valued by teachers and children alike. The teachers are also keen to learn methods of interactive teaching from you. You may also want to introduce to the teachers positive reinforcement as a method of discipline as opposed to the corporal punishment currently in use.
Schedule The school is open Monday to Friday from 8.15am to 3.30pm, it is possible to assist after this time with extra curricular arts classes or sports if you wish to take the initiative to instigate this. The school is closed for holidays in April, August and December for 1 month.
Resources The school is relatively well equipped but any art or sports equipment or teaching aids that you can supply will assist you in your teaching and will provide the children with a more interactive education.
Special points It is possible to place 3-4 volunteers at this placement at one
[edit] Arusha Hillside Academy
Project Summary Arusha Hillside Academy was established in 2005 with just a handful of kids and 1 teacher. It now has over 200 students, 7 classrooms and 9 teaching staff. The age of the children varies from 2.5 to 14 years old; it has a nursery and primary school with 2 preschool classes with children between the ages of 4 and 6. There is a Standard 1 class, a Standard 2 class and 2 classes each of Standards 3,4,5, and 6. As there are not enough government Primary schools in Tanzania, Arusha Hillside Academy was established as a private school where children have to pay to attend. As some of the children are orphaned and many come from single parent families, they often cannot afford the school fees and the school is left lacking in resources. The school is a 25 minutes drive from the volunteer house.
Activities You will be teaching English and Math’s to all age groups and any time and knowledge that you would like to give to teach Science, Sports and Arts would be valued by teachers and children alike. The teachers are also keen to learn methods of interactive teaching from you. You may also want to introduce to the teachers positive reinforcement as a method of discipline as opposed to the corporal punishment currently in use. The school is closed for holidays in April, August and December for 1 month.
Resources The school is relatively well equipped but any art or sports equipment or teaching aids that you can supply will assist you in your teaching and will provide the children with a more interactive education.
Special points It is possible to place 3-4 volunteers at this placement at one time.
[edit] Suye Primary and Nursery School
Project Summary This school has 979 students attending it between the ages of 5 and 14. This is a Government school and therefore they follow a structure of Tanzanian learning standards. It has 7 classrooms from standard one to seven with two streams each. It has 23 teachers as well as a vice principal and a principle. Teaching English, Math’s, Science, Geography and History are the main taught subjects. Many of these subjects are taught in Kiswahili. The school is located at a 15 minutes walk from the volunteer’s house.
Activities As many of the subjects are taught in Kiswahili, you will mainly teach English, either assisting the teacher or giving your own class, but any help that you can offer with basic Math’s or Geography would be appreciated. You need to be motivated to plan and create new lessons, as there are no teaching aids and materials to help you. English lessons should be very basic and clear as a lot of the students have learning problems and have had a difficult childhood. The children are always keen to learn and love to know new and exciting facts. By learning English at a young age the children will be presented with more opportunities which will lead brighter future in regards to work and further education.
Schedule Lessons begin at 7.30 am and finish 3.00pm, you will be teaching certain subjects and will be given a time table of lessons that you will need to attend. Any extra time that you can give to the school whether it is to help with other subjects or to assist with sports would be much appreciated by the Suye staff and children.
Resources Although government schools in Tanzania are free to attend, the children do have to pay a contribution to supplement resources. As many can’t afford this there is a severe lack of teaching materials, books and pens for the children. The school is unable to provide you with any teaching aids so bringing teaching books, worksheets and any other useful interactive teaching aids.
Special Points Suye Primary School has also a nursery school. It can thus receive volunteers for both nursery and primary levels simultaneously.

The school construction and teachers salaries are part of Art in Tanzania donation scheme.
Activities As many of the subjects are taught in Kiswahili, you will mainly teach English, either assisting the teacher or giving your own class, but any help that you can offer with basic Math’s or Geography would be appreciated. You need to be motivated to plan and create new lessons, as there are not enough teaching aids and materials to help you. English lessons should be very basic and clear as a lot of the students have learning problems. The children are always keen to learn and love to know new and exciting facts. By learning English at a young age the children will be presented with more opportunities which will lead brighter future in regards to work and further education.
Schedule Lessons begin at 8.00am and finish 1.00pm for primary school kids and 11.30 am for nursery school. You will be teaching certain subjects and will be given a timetable of lessons that you will need to attend. Any extra time that you can give to the school whether it is to help with other subjects or to assist with sports would be much appreciated by both teachers and children.
Resources The school is new and is only relying to donations. No school fees paid to help run the school activities as all kids study for free. There is thus a severe lack of teaching materials, books and pens for the children. The school is unable to provide you with enough teaching aids so bringing teaching books, worksheets and any other useful interactive teaching aids.
Special Points Masai Village Nursery & Primary School is situated in a Masai village whose chief, the Laibon has 30 wives with almost 248 children. Most of the kids are the offspring of the Laibon. The Masai tribe is lagging far behind other tribes in Tanzania in matter of education. Volunteers will be able to share ideas and resources with the 2 teachers. They will moreover learn the teaching experience in Masai culture. This project can take as many as 6 volunteers at any time.
Needs The school needs various things ranging from desks, stationeries, sports and games equipment, building materials, food stuffs for kids coming from afar, reference books for teachers, and pupils’ books.

[edit] Moshi Projects
[edit] Chemchem Nursery School
Project Summary This nursery was built in 2005 and caters for 90 children between the ages of 2 ½ and 6, 20 of which are orphans, the rest of which are mainly street children. Because there is only 1 classroom for so many children lessons are split, the 45 children under the age of 5 are taught in the morning and the 45 remaining 5 to 6 year olds are taught in the afternoon. There are 2 teachers at the school but volunteers are greatly needed to give the children the one on one attention that they need and deserve. The teaching staff would also like the volunteers to help them with the planning of interactive lessons and giving them ideas to improve their teaching. The school is situated in a poor village a 45 minute walk away from the volunteer house. Although this is a private nursery, most of the children can’t afford the 2500Tsh per month fee and therefore attend for free.
Activities You will be assisting the teachers with English and basic Math’s lessons, you will also be expected to teach the children art and craft, games, nursery rhymes and songs.
Schedule The school is open from Monday to Friday, the lessons for the under 5 year olds are from 8am to 12pm and the lessons for the 5 to 6 year olds are from 12pm to 3pm. The school closes for holidays in December for 1 month and at Easter for 1 week.
Resources The school is lacking in basic resources such as books and pencils, also anything that you can provide that will aid teaching such as teaching books, art and craft materials, reading books, flash cards and also sports equipment would be gratefully appreciated and will also help you to give lessons during your time there.
Special points Depending on the amount of volunteers, we try to place 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Give a Heart to Africa Nursery School
Project Summery Give a heart to Africa Nursery School was founded in June 2009 and is a private nursery. It has 24 children attending the school between the ages of 2 and 5. It has one classroom and one teacher. The teacher would like volunteers to help improve the quality of education for the children by teaching her new methods and also to help provide a good English education. The Nursery is situated in a village about 45 minutes walk from the volunteer house.
Activities As a volunteer you will be involved in many activities but the main one will be teaching English as a foreign language. As you will be working in a nursery you will be teaching very basic English, like the alphabet for example. By learning English at a young age the children will be presented with more opportunities which will lead to a brighter future in regards to work. You will also be involved with supporting the teacher with basic Math’s, games and nursery rhymes. There is very little equipment at the school so creativity and new teaching ideas are welcome. Although experience isn’t necessary to teach at this school, volunteers should have a genuine love of children and young people as well as the energy and enthusiasm to help these children.
Schedule This is a morning project. The school is open Monday to Thursday, 9am – 12.00 pm. The school is open most of the year apart from 1 week for Easter and 1 month for Christmas. However, this may change in the coming days as the school steadily expands.
Resources The school is not equipped with the basics such as exercise books and pens. You will need materials such as books, flash cards and worksheets to prepare for and give interactive lessons. Any extra teaching resources that you can bring with you would be appreciated: useful materials include art materials, pencils, children’s reading books, chalk, stickers and paper.
Special Points As this only a small school it can only take one volunteer at a time. The school teaches primary school kids as tuition in afternoon.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Faraja Day Care for Orphans
Project Summary Faraja day care nursery was set up by a local couple in a poor village about a 45 minute walk away from the Moshi voluntary house. The aim of the centre is to give orphans who have been placed within the local community the chance to receive some basic education as they have no money to pay to attend school. The original centre was situated in a hut with no walls and a tin roof but a large classroom was built in May 2007 by 2 volunteers with subsequent volunteers providing windows, desks, benches and many more resources such as games, teaching aids and sporting equipment. The centre caters for 45 children between the ages of 3 ½ and 12 who are all taught in the same classroom. This centre is a prime example of what good and hard work volunteers can produce for the benefit of other people.
Activities There is one teacher at the school who teaches in Kiswahili however this project relies on volunteers for support and to give the children the attention that they need. You will be teaching English, basic Math’s, the weather, the time to the children as well as entertaining them with games, nursery rhymes, songs, music and dancing.
Schedule Lessons start at 8.00 and finish when you want to go home. These children do not have anywhere else to go so stay at the centre for as long as you are willing to teach them. You may wish to teach in the morning and play games or do sports in the afternoon, any extra time that you can give this school will be appreciated by the children and staff and will prove rewarding for yourself. The centre only closes for 1 week at Christmas and 1 week at Easter.
Resources As this centre has been recently built they have do have a lot of equipment for the children however it does not provide teaching materials for volunteers. You may need materials such as books, flash cards and worksheets to prepare for and give interactive lessons.
Special points These children have lived in incredibly poor conditions and have had and in many cases are still having an extremely difficult childhood, be prepared for them to have discipline and learning problems. As all of the children attending the centre are orphans, almost none of them can afford to pay to attend, the school is still funded by the couple who built it who also provide money each month to ensure that all of the children get a meal at the centre. This is often the only meal that the children get each day as the families that they are placed with in the community simply neglect them as they cannot afford to feed them. The children often come to the centre looking for food in the evenings and holidays, which Mr. and Mrs. Masawe gladly provide them with. With enough help from other volunteers the center plans to open on Saturdays and Sundays in the future. Depending on the amount of volunteers, we try to place 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Fountain Nursery =
Project Summary Fountain Nursery was established in 2006, there are 36 children who attend the school, 3 of which are orphans the rest of which are almost all street children or social orphans. The children who attend the school live in a very poor village, the orphans and the street children are placed with families in the community to help care for them. This village and the school are a 45 minute walk from the Moshi voluntary house. The age range for this school is 3 to 6 however sometimes there are children attending when they are aged 7 as they can not afford the fees or the uniform to attend primary school. Up until recently there was only one class room which consisted of a tin roof, tin walls and a dirt floor, but with the help of previous volunteers 2 proper classrooms have been built. Only one of the classrooms is completed, the other classroom is expected to be finished by the end of 2007. Once the other classroom is complete, one classroom will house the 3 and 4 year olds, with the 5 to 7 year olds in the other, this will also allow the school to take more children.
Schedule This is a morning project which needs volunteers from 8.00am to 11.30am. Often there isn’t enough money to provide the children with their daily porridge, in which case school may finish earlier as the children loose concentration due to hunger. The school is open all year apart from 2 weeks in December and 2 weeks at Easter.
Resources Although the school is newly built they are not equipped with the basics such as exercise books and pens. You will need materials such as books, flash cards and worksheets to prepare for and give interactive lessons. Any extra teaching resources that you can bring with you would be appreciated: useful materials include art materials, pencils, children’s reading books, chalk, stickers and paper.
Special points All of the children live in poor conditions and only 6 out of the 36 can afford the 2500Tsh ($3) a month to attend the school, the rest are attending free of charge however that leaves no money to pay the teacher, equip the school and provide the children with porridge every day. The teacher is very helpful and friendly but only speaks basic English so your help and assistance to the teacher as well as the children will be greatly appreciated. Depending on the amount of volunteers, we try to place 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:

Schedule The morning class is for children aged between 3 and 4 and starts at 8.00am and finishes at 1.30pm. From PM 3 to PM 5 the school is used for tuition.
Resources This school is in need of any equipment that anyone can donate such as books, reading books, pens and chalk. You may find it useful to bring materials such as teaching books, flash cards and worksheets to prepare for and give interactive lessons.
Special points The school accepts volunteers staying one month or more.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Good Hope Nursery School
Project Summary This school was founded in 2004 to help the children in the local community receive a basic education. There are 25 children between the age of 3 ½ and 6 who attend the school, 3 children of the 25 children are orphans and many are street children. There are 2 teachers at the school who are enthusiastic to learn new teaching methods and techniques from the volunteers and to improve their English by communicating with them. The nursery is situated about 20 minutes walk away from the Moshi voluntary house. Volunteers should be enthusiastic and motivated to help provide an education to these children. Although experience isn’t needed to teach at this school, volunteers should have a genuine love of children and young people as well as the energy to help these children.
Activities Your role will mainly be to teach basic Math’s and English however the children also like to sing and learn nursery rhymes. The teacher also like the volunteers to participate in teaching the Kiswahili lessons and plans this in a way that makes it fun as well as allowing the volunteer to learn basic Kiswahili language at the same time. You will need to plan lessons and produce worksheets to assist the children’s learning and make lessons interactive.
Schedule School starts at 8.00am and finish at 12.00pm, Monday to Friday. You will be working alongside a Kiswahili teacher who has been teaching at the nursery since it opened. There is also an opportunity to work at this school in the afternoon teaching local youths (see Good Hope Youth Education. The school takes holidays for 1 month in April, 1 month in August and 1 month in December.
Resources This school is relatively well equipped, in comparison to other schools however is still lacking in many resources. You will need to provide you own teaching materials and notes for lesson plans. The children also have a lack of exercise books and pens, other useful materials include art materials, coloured pencils and crayons, children’s reading books, chalk, stickers and paper.
Special Points This is a private school however many of the children can not pay the 8000Tsh per month to attend it and therefore the school lacks many materials. The school is housed in building made from corrugated iron which has no ceiling or windows, making it difficult to teach during the wet season. They would like volunteers to help them to raise enough funds to be able to help them finish the school if possible. A lot of the children live in extremely difficult conditions and may have learning and social problems. As this is a small school with a full time teacher, usually only 1 volunteer is placed here.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Kilimani Nursery School
Project Summary This school was established in 2006 and although Mama Leigh has only been in Moshi for 1 year she has over 13 years experience in teaching. The nursery is situated about a 45 minute walk from the Moshi voluntary house in a poor village. Until recently lessons were taught outside under a tree and in January 2007 a group of volunteers funded the building and furnishing of a classroom. Since then 2 further classrooms have been built and are due for completion by the end of 2007. There are 80 children between the ages of 3 and 7 that attend the nursery, they are currently split into a morning and an afternoon group due to lack of space however once the 2 new classrooms are complete the children will be split by age to give each age group the attention that they need. Volunteers at this school should be enthusiastic and motivated to help a school which is looking to the future.
Activities The children are taught English, basic Math’s, art and craft, games and nursery rhymes. You will be assisting in all areas of teaching and providing the children with valuable interaction as well as a better understanding of English.
Schedule The morning session has 40 children aged 3 to 5 years old and is from 8am to 11am, the afternoon session with the remaining 6 to 7 year olds is from 11.30am to 2.30pm. Any extra time that you can provide to help plan and create interactive lessons and to play with the children would be appreciated. The school closes for 2 weeks over Christmas and a week at Easter.
Resources Although this school has recently been extended it is still lacking basic resources such as children’s exercise books, pens and chalk. Teaching aids are not provided and therefore you may want to bring teaching books, flash cards and other materials for yourself.
Special points Many of the children can not afford the 2000 Tsh per month to attend the school, it is therefore very poor and lacking in resources. This school is open Monday to Friday all year round, to give the children somewhere to go in the holidays. Any teaching ideas, plans and methods are welcomed to help the success of this school. Mama Leigh would like to extend the school to an all day centre to provide the children with somewhere to go in the afternoon to play, have extra lessons, do their homework and have a meal. Many of the children don’t get fed and don’t receive any attention at home therefore an all day centre would be a valuable commodity to the community. Depending on the amount of volunteers, we try to place 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Montesori Kindergarten
Project summary This nursery was founded in 1997, it is located in a respectable neighborhood of Moshi and shares its grounds with a Vocational Centre; both the centre and the kindergarten are run by nuns. There are 70 children divided between 2 classrooms, with the 2 ½ to 4 year olds in one class and the 5 and 6 year olds in another class. There are 3 teachers and often there is an independent volunteer there also. The centre is a 20 minute daladala ride and a short walk from the volunteer house.
Activities You will be assisting the nuns in teaching English, Math’s, drawing, singing as well as giving lessons yourself and playing with the children in their break time.
Schedule This programme starts at 7.30am until 12.00pm with a break mid morning. The kindergarten takes the usual school holidays of 1 month in December, 1 week at Easter, 1 month in June and 1 week in September.
Resources This school is well equipped and although you will often be working along side a teacher you may need teaching books to help you plan lessons. Any other materials to help make the lessons more interactive such as art and craft materials, flash cards etc are also very useful.
Special Points 25% of the children at this school cannot afford to pay the fees so the nuns then seek sponsorship from within the community to complete the payments as a result the school is well equipped. We usually only have 1 volunteers working at this project at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Njoro Kindergarten
Project summary This nursery was founded in 2003, and is located in a Lutheran church in the Majengo Parish, a 45 minute walk from the volunteer house. The school has 30 children between the ages of 3 and 6, of which 3 are orphans the rest of which come from single parent or extremely low income families. The children are taught in the church hall using the pews for benches and desks, they also have mats for when they are working on the floor. The school has 2 permanent teachers who teach the children basic English, Math’s, reading and writing.
Activities You will teach or assist with the teaching of English and basic Math’s e.g. 1+2=; as well as games, singing, nursery rhymes, drawing and painting. Schedule This is a morning programme which starts at 8.30am until 12.00pm. There is a break for porridge mid morning.
Resources The school is reasonably well equipped with games and basic material but any Art and Craft materials such as coloured pencils and crayons, paints, paper, pipe cleaners etc would be useful and would also help you to give interactive lessons while you are there. Any other teaching materials that you may want to take such as worksheets and flash cards would assist you when planning and giving lessons.
Special Points It costs the children 4,000 Tsh per month to attend the school however only 11 of the 30 can afford to pay and even these do not pay the full amount. We usually have 1 to 2 volunteers working at this project at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Tumaini Nursery
Project Summary This nursery is situated about a 45 minute walk from the Moshi voluntary house in a large but poor village. The school was founded in 1999 by Olivia the main teacher at the school who set it up to help the children in her local community. The children are aged between 3 and 6 and live in conditions of extreme poverty and often suffer abuse, so volunteers should expect the children to have learning difficulties and problems; despite this the children are very energetic, happy and keen to learn. There are 200 children attending this school and there is only 1 classroom so the classes are split into morning classes and afternoon classes. Of the 200 children 10 of them are orphans and over half are street children.
Activities This school has 200 children and only 2 teachers, the children therefore do not receive much individual teaching attention. As they can not afford to pay for another teacher, the school relies on volunteers. You will be teaching English, very basic Math’s, games, songs and nursery rhymes.
Schedule The morning class is for children aged between 3 and 4 and starts at 8.00am and finishes at 11am. The afternoon class is for children aged 5 to 6, class starts at 12pm and finishes at 2pm. Resources This school is in need of any equipment that anyone can donate such as books, reading books, pens and chalk. You may find it useful to bring materials such as teaching books, flash cards and worksheets to prepare for and give interactive lessons.
Special points This is a very poor school which needs a lot of help; although it is a private school many of the children can not afford to pay the 1500Tsh a month to attend it which is why the school lacks in basic equipment. The current classroom is a hut with unfinished walls and a dirt floor however volunteers have funded a new classroom that should be finished by the end of 2007. Depending on the amount of volunteers, we try to place 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Tumani Women’s Nursery School
Project summery Tumaini Women’s Nursery school is a private school that was founded in 2008. As it is such a new school it is very poorly equipped. It has 15 students between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. 5 of the children are orphans. There is one class and one teacher. The school is a 45 minute walk away from the house.
Schedule This is a project. The school is open to Monday to Friday between 9am and 11:30am. There are only two school holidays at Christmas and Easter.
Activities Volunteers are required to teach simple English such as the alphabet and basic math’s. They can also do sports and games with the children. The teacher also would greatly appreciate being taught modern teaching methods so that the children get the best and most up to date level of education that they can.
Special Points The school has barely any furniture so if volunteers would like to do a fundraising before coming this would be an ideal project to work with.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:

Schedule This is a morning programme which starts at 8.00am until 12.00pm. If the school has enough money then there will be a break for porridge mid morning. Any extra time that you can provide this school with would be greatly appreciated, such as running games or sports groups for the children in the afternoon.
Resources This school has been recently refurbished however they are still lacking the basic resources such as books, pens and chalk. Although you will often be working along side a teacher you may need teaching books to help you plan lessons. Any other materials to help make the lessons more interactive such as art and craft materials, flash cards etc are also very useful.
Special Points This school is situated in a poor village and although there are no orphans or street children attending this school a lot of the children are brought up in difficult conditions and can not afford to pay the 2500Tsh a month to attend. The children then attend for free but this leaves the school short of money to buy materials and porridge. We usually have a maximum of 2 volunteers working at this project at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Wazazi Nursery school
Project Summary Wazazi nursery is situated at a 45 minute walk away from the Moshi voluntary house, in a poor village. The school was founded in 1991 and has since increased steadily in the number of pupils. There are 80 children between the ages of 3 and 6 attending the school, 10 of which are orphans. This school has 1 classroom which consists of a tin roof and no walls and can not cater for the number of children therefore they are split into morning and afternoon sessions. There is great demand for volunteers as the number of children is so high that it is hard for the 2 teachers to help all the children.
Activities You are needed to teach English and basic Math’s as well as teaching sports and nursery rhymes; you may also teach general games the children can play at school and at home. Apart from giving lessons any extra attention and affection that you can give these children will be welcomed enormously by them. Although you do not require experience or any special skills, volunteers should be enthusiastic and motivated to make changes for the school. The children are very energetic and keen to learn and the teachers are very welcoming.
Schedule Due to the number of children attending this school there are classes in the morning and in the afternoon. The morning class is from 8.00am to 11.30am and the afternoon class is from 11.30am to 1.30pm. The classes are split by age, the children that attend the morning class are aged 3 to 4 and in the afternoon the children are aged 5 to 6. Although this is a private school they try and use the government programme and teach at the same standard and have holidays when the government schools have them; a week at Easter, a month in June, a week in September and a month in December.
Resources This school is situated among a poor community and as well as not having any walls it is also lacking in basic materials such as exercise books, pencils, pens, teaching books, paints and games.
Special points Many of the children can not pay the 1500Tsh per month fees to attend this school and so they attend for free. This school is in desperate need of renovation, the fact that it has no walls makes it almost impossible to teach in the wet season. This would be an ideal project for any volunteers interested in doing fundraising before arrival in order to be able to rebuild the school. Depending on the amount of volunteers, we try to place 2 volunteers at this placement at one time.

[edit] Kilimanjaro Children’s Joy Foundation Orphanage
Project Summary The orphanage was started in 1999 and now supports over 70 children between the ages of 1 and 19. Not all of the children are orphans, some have simply been abandoned or abused. Many of the children are sponsored to attend boarding school during term time. Of the remaining children, those between the ages of 7 and 14 attend Primary Schools in the mornings, the pre school children are taught at the orphanage by a local teacher and volunteers. The orphanage is very run down and is lacking in basic facilities; the nursery school lessons are given outside and the children sleep at least 2 to a bed. The orphanage is located in Boma N’gombe which is a 40 minute daladala ride and a 1 ½ km walk from the volunteer house. This is a demanding project, due to their difficult backgrounds many of the children have behavioral issues and many are clingy and desperate for attention. You need to stay for a minimum of 1 month to be able to volunteer at this project as your absolute dedication and commitment is essential.
Activities You are given the opportunity to work freely to help in any way that you can, for example; teaching the pre school children their ABC, 123, reading and writing, helping with meals, gardening, caring for the chickens, pigs and cows, arranging activities, playing, singing, helping the older children with homework and generally providing the children with some much needed order, discipline, attention, love and affection.
Schedule The orphanage needs your help for as many hours as you are willing to give but due to the nature of the project you will need to be there from at least 10am until 4pm. Resources The orphanage is in need of everything; shoes, flip flips, clothes, jumpers, socks, bed sheets, plastic mattress covers (many of the children wet the bed), blankets, underwear, soap, food, books, games, toys etc.
Special Points This project can take up to 2 volunteers at any time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Swiwsco Orphanage
Project Summary This orphanage was established by Mr. Tamimu with the help of his family that wanted to provide a stable home for some of the local orphans. 45 orphans currently live at the orphanage along with 2 staff. The orphanage was founded in 2008 and relies on donations and the help of volunteers and his own family to keep it running. The orphanage is situated about a 45 minute walk from the volunteer house. The children that live at this house are aged between 2 and 10 and have been orphaned as a result of AIDS and other causes. To work at this project, volunteers need to be aware of the effects of HIV and AIDS and have the ability to help provide the children with some normality, fun and education.
Activities Most of the children attend local schools in the morning but some are not yet old enough. In the morning the younger children remaining at the centre, receive basic nursery education so you can assist with ABC, 123, games and songs. In the afternoon, you will need to help children with their homework, play games, teach basic English and assist the staff with the basic care of the children as well as simply giving the children some much needed love and attention. If you can offer any help to the staff in teaching them English this would also be appreciated as they would like to be able to teach the children English when there is no volunteer support.
Schedule As many hours as you are willing to give. This is a day care centre and therefore it needs assistance in the afternoon as well as morning. The staff at the orphanage would be very grateful for any time that you can give. The orphanage is open all year round.
Resources This orphanage is in need of many things including: beds, bed sheets, clothes for the children and teaching materials. Games and toys are also excellent donations as they have so few. Food stuffs are desperately needed as, due to the meager income of the founders and the lack of donors, food stuffs are always a thorny problem.
Special Points The children at this orphanage have had very difficult lives and they may have learning and social problems but they are extremely loving and enthusiastic. As the school is funded by the owner and by volunteer and community donations the children have no money of their own, therefore the orphanage can not afford to send them to school and buy school uniforms. When working on this project it is worth thinking about raising funds for the sponsorship of the children to be able to go to school. There is usually 2 or more volunteers working at this project at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:

Project Summary This school is about an hours walk from the volunteer house however it is also possible to get a daladala part of the way. This school has 301 students between the ages of 14 and 20, housed in 6 classrooms with 11 teachers. With the volunteers help the students will have the opportunity to have lessons taught in smaller groups with more personal attention. This is a very demanding project and volunteers should be positive and motivated to improve the students academic abilities.
Activities You will be teaching English and supporting the local teaching staff in their English lessons. If you able to teach Math’s or Science at Secondary level, this assistance would be much appreciated. Also, any other time you can offer helping with Art, Sports or giving the teachers some feedback will be welcomed.
Schedule Lessons begin at 7.40am and finish at 4.30 pm, however it is likely that you will receive a time table for the lessons that you will teach.
Resources This school has many resources for the students however there aren’t many resources for teachers. There is a syllabus but there are no teaching guides so you will need to bring materials such as teaching aids, worksheets and any teaching books to help you to effectively teach the subjects at a secondary level.
Special points Sometimes you will be teaching up to 62 students in one lesson and some of the students may have learning difficulties. Although this school appears to be relatively well equipped, it is still very poor and lacks many materials. This project can take up to as many as 3 volunteers at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:
[edit] Uwawayaki Learning Centre for Secondary Education
Project Summary As this centre is not registered with the government, it is not officially allowed to call itself a Secondary School, it does however perform exactly the same role as a Secondary School. It is situated in a poor village about an hour walk away from the Moshi voluntary house and the aim of the centre is to provide secondary education to disadvantaged youths in the area. The centre has 130 students between the ages of 15 and 18 split between 3 classrooms, all of which are outside. There are 5 teachers only one of which is qualified, the rest are students who have graduated from Secondary School with good grades. These teachers try to teach all the core subjects, Math’s, English, Kiswahili, Science Geography and History and if they have the time and resources they teach arts and business. There are never more then 50 students in each class but be prepared for teaching large numbers of students.
Activities The main role that you play in the school is to teach English, this will be at a relatively basic level, lessons may include verbs, tenses and adjectives for example. If you have the knowledge it is also possible to assist with the teaching of subjects such as Science and Maths as well as extra curricular activities such as Sports and Music, this is at your own initiative but would be greatly valued by the staff and students alike.
Schedule Lessons begin at 8.00am and finish at 4pm with a break for lunch around 1pm. You should be given a timetable of the lessons that you will teach at which times although the teaching staff would appreciate any extra time that you can give them.
Resources Around 35% of the students cannot afford to pay the 4,000Tsh per month school fees and as a result there are very few teaching resources. You should bring teaching aids, text books and other materials to help plan lessons. There is also an immense lack of basic resources such as pens and exercise books.
Special points Some of the children have learning difficulties and need more attention than others, however due to the lack of teachers and large number of students this is not possible without the help of volunteers. Depending on numbers we try to place at least 2 volunteers at this school at one time.
Volunteers Notes and Comments:

Project Summary This school is a government school with 66 students and 16 of them orphans, 7 classes and ages of the kids between 8 - 22 years old. 5 teachers are operating in the school with 5-6 classes.

Schedule School starts at 8.00am and finish at 2,00pm however as you will only be teaching certain subjects you will receive a time table. This school really relies on volunteers and any extra time that you can offer them would be welcomed.
Resources Although this is a government school, many of the children can’t afford the contributions so the school is lacking in teaching materials such as text books, exercise books, dictionaries, pens. The teachers have no resources to help them plan and give interactive lessons, so any books, worksheets and creative ideas would be useful to both you and the teachers.
Special Points The school is problematically located at a place where there is no local bus transport so one needs simply to walk the 5,4km distance. This project can take as many as 2 volunteers at any time.

Activities Volunteers are required to teach English, basic maths, sports and games and IT. You can chose in which part of the school you work, but the activities will generally be the same just different levels for each unit in the school. You will need to be motivated to plan and create lessons plans as the resources and teaching aids in the school are very basic. Volunteers can also provide new knowledge and teaching methods to the teaching staff.
Resources Resources at the school are at a bare minimum. Any resources that the volunteers can provide such as books, teaching aids, sports equipment, paints etc would be greatly appreciated. Special Points Any volunteer that chooses to work in the learning disabilities unit must realize that the work will be very challenging, but at the same time very rewarding. Any teaching in Tanzania can be frustrating due to the language barrier, but even more so in this unit. It is better for a volunteer who is staying for a month or longer to teach at this project as the children will benefit from a higher level of continuity, commitment and stability.

The lessons take place in a room at the volunteer house and as a result it is now not only Maasai who attend the class but also other members of the house staff and some neighbours. The level of English taught is very basic and many of those attending the class have little or no formal education so are no always able to read and write proficiently; they are however very enthusiastic and willing to learn. The class currently has around 10 students of all different ages and relies on volunteers as there is no formal teacher. We need dedicated volunteers for this project as it has occurred too often that there was no teacher.
Activities You will be teaching basic English language. You will need to plan and structure your lessons well and ensure that lessons are interactive in order to make them effective. Schedule The class is from Monday to Friday from 5pm to 6pm all year round. Resources There is a blackboard in the teaching room but other resources such as books and pens are not provided. [edit] Mkombozi Vocational Training and Community Development Centre
Project Summary This school for adults was established by Asha in 1989. Most of the students at the centre are orphans or come from extremely low income families and the centre is aimed at providing them with a vocational education to give them a kick start to a working future; finding work will not only benefit them but also their families. There are 58 students that attend this centre, those attending the tailoring classes are 15 years old or above and those attending Hotel Services are 18 years and above. The tailoring course involves sewing, machine embroidery, knitting and batik making. The Hotel Services course involves cookery, housekeeping, reception, customer services, English, Germen, French, Business Management, basic computers, accounting, marketing tourism. There is 1 computer room with 10 computers, 2 rooms for tailoring and 1 classroom and 1 kitchen for Hotel Services. The centre also runs a women’s group and a youth group twice a week where the local community can come to share ideas and discuss how to solve problems. As well as being a development centre, the school also provides a place for some of the female students to live. Volunteers for this project should be business minded with some experience using computers. Motivation and enthusiasm in creating lessons is important.
Activities You are needed for all subjects taught at the centre, especially Hotel Services and in particular English as jobs in this sector involve contact with many tourists. Any skills you have that will assist the teaching staff to provide students with a better education would be welcome.
Schedule You will start work at this project at 8.00am and finish at 2.20pm. It is also possible to assist with the women’s and youth groups in the afternoons. The project is very flexible and you can put in as much work as you want however any extra that you can give this school will benefit the students who are looking for work and a future. The school is open all year round apart from public holidays.
Resources Although there are sewing machines and computers the school does lack teaching material such as business books, computer books and exercise books for the pupils to write in. Any material on hotel services would be very useful.
Special Points This school is funded by the money that the students pay to attend it. This money pays for the teachers and the food for the women who board there. All of the equipment at the school was donated and it remains a very poor school. The school is looking forward to the future and with the help of future volunteers this school will be able to expand into a large learning business school. There is the possibility for 3 volunteers to assist at this project but experience in the ELD relevant fields is preferred.

[edit] Medical - HIV - Uwawayaki Health Center
Project Summary This health center was established in 2006 and aims to help those who are sick though home based care in the eight wards of the Moshi urban area. The health center is situated in a poor village about an hour walk away from the Moshi volunteer house. The clinic was renovated in 2007 through donations from i-to-I and funds are raised for the clinic through the sale of batiks. There are two municipal nurses and one doctor who work at the clinic. The nurses visit patients who are HIV positive, suffering from tuberculosis and diabetes. Patients also stop by the clinic for advice and to receive HIV counseling. Behind the clinic is a children’s center with a nursery school for orphans who receive medical care at the clinic if needed. Activities: During the home visits volunteers will follow the municipal nurses and the doctor to the homes of patients. They will assess the patient’s situation at home, their diet, if they are taking their medication properly, help them with exercise, feeding and bathing. If they are in critical condition, the patients are sent to the hospital. They are supplied with clothes, sugar, soap and rice if they are available. As the health center visits patients in the eight wards of the Moshi urban area, volunteers will have to either walk or take the bus to the patients’ homes. Schedule: The home visits occur Monday to Friday from 9 am until 1 or 2 pm.
Resources The center has very little in terms of resources and is in need of medical equipment. Volunteers can make donations if they wish and can bring/make posters for the clinic on HIV awareness. There is also an enormous lack of medical supplies such as plasters and antiseptic cream.
Special Points At least one volunteer with medical training is needed for this project. Other volunteers with no medical training may also take part in the project as they will be guided by both the municipal and volunteer nurses. This is an excellent opportunity for the volunteers and the municipal nurses to exchange information and learn from each other about health practices in their respective countries.

[edit] Zanzibar Mzuri Kaja Village Projects
The area in which these projects reside is a size-able village of approximately 4,000 people called Mzuri Kaja; which is found within the region of Makunduchi. Most of the villagers are involved with either fishing or agriculture in order to make a living, and this kind of lifestyle seems to go hand in hand with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and community spirit. Presently there are three specific schools in which volunteers will be able to work in however, these schools are very large with a minimum of 700 students attending each so there are many opportunities for volunteers to make a difference. Kusini and Kiongoni Schools have both Primary school and Secondary school students which means ages can range from 6yrs to 18yrs hopefully providing the perfect opportunity for all volunteers. All three schools are within fairly easy walking distance of the volunteers’ accommodation, ranging from a 10 minute to a 25 minute walk. Afternoon projects will be easily available due to the pleasant community environment within Mzuri Kaja, so such things as sports coaching for the children of the village and Adult English classes will be warmly welcomed. There is also a hospital approximately 10-15 minutes walk away from the volunteer needed. As anywhere, help is happily received and this will undoubtedly mean that any medical interns, doctors or nurses will be sincerely welcomed to work at the establishment. There are number of activities for the volunteers to do during their spare time, with one beach only 10-15 minutes walk away from the village and another about half an hour away. There are a number of local bars around Mzuri Kaja and Makunduchi and with such friendly locals; volunteers will undoubtedly be invited to join in with more traditional ways of passing the time. For example, every year in July a festival named Mwaka Kogwa takes place. During this festival, ritual combat is performed in order to dispel all the locals’ anger and misunderstandings of the past year so they can start afresh for the next. A very exciting event for all involved, combatants and spectators. Of course it must be understood that Mzuri Kaja is still a small, rural village and may not cater for certain things of which volunteers would be used to. Stone Town is approximately an hour and a half drive away and here you can find larger bars, international restaurants and even a nightclub which may suit volunteers more for relaxation at the weekends.
[edit] Kiongoni Primary & Secondary School
Project Summary Kiongoni School is a primary and secondary school, which is situated in the area of Makunduchi in the south of Zanzibar. It is in the village of Mzuri Kaja which has a population of approximately 4000; with the main focus of work in agriculture or fishing. The school has existed for a great deal of time, having been established in 1946. With approximately 780 students ranging between the ages of 7 to 16 years between both the primary and secondary factions, Kiongoni School is fairly substantial in size. There are 18 classes altogether, with approximately 40-50 students in each one and a total 25 teachers throughout the school. The school is about 25 minutes walk away from the volunteer accommodation, during which the volunteers will be able to interact with many local villagers.
Activities Kiswahili, maths, science, English, social studies and sports are all taught to the students of all ages. Volunteers are needed mainly to teach English and also science at Kiongoni, but are always welcome to assist in any of the other subjects or activities. It’s often a good idea to become creative when planning lessons, as this is something that tends to lack in most education in both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. Corporal punishment is generally in place as what’s considered to be an effective discipline system. We do not ask volunteers to adopt this method only to respect it. You will usually find your own method that works and may try to introduce it to the other teaching staff.
Schedule Kiongoni School is open for 7 hours, starting from the early morning up to early afternoon; Monday to Friday. Holidays: The school is closed for one week in April , one week in June and for the whole of August and September.
Resources Kiongoni Primary and Secondary School has a number of spacious classrooms with wall length chalkboards which helps create a comfortable teaching environment for the volunteers. Any stationary is always appreciated as they merely have the basics. However, we’ve found that it is sharpeners and erasers that are needed most. Pens and pencils can always be bought locally. Any extra stationary or work resources you may wish to bring in order to enthuse the children about their education and develop any creative outlets will always be appreciated. Arts and Crafts is always a great way to get the pupils to learn a topic more intently. At Kiongoni, science is an important subject and any science apparatus that can be provided will be highly appreciated. Typewriters and computers are also requested, but this is obviously at the volunteers’ discretion.
Special Points The children attending are generally either Christian or Muslim. We ask volunteers to respect a more professional dress code on Zanzibar due to the large Muslim population. This is a rather large project and would be able to take up to 15-20 volunteers.
Volunteers comments and notes

[edit] Zanzibar - Stone Town Projects
[edit] Forodhani Nuymba ya Watoto Yatima Orphanage
Project Summary The orphanage is based in the heart of Stone Town, near the newly constructed Forodhani Park opposite the Old Fort, the orphanage was opened in 1965. It is located about a 5-minute walk from our Volunteer House on Vuga Street. It currently houses 52 children ranging in age from 3 years old to 23 years old, all these children have arrived at the orphanage due to being left after birth by parents that cannot afford or spare the time to take care of them, or they have come directly from living a life on the streets of Stone Town and the surrounding villages. All of these children are given the means to go to a school to further their education from the orphanage, to do this they receive small funding from the government, sending the children to primary, secondary schools and university. The orphanage also provides the children with evening classes, covering the same subjects as they would attend in school.
Activities This orphanage requires any and all volunteers; their parents have neglected these children or they do not have parents at all, so even if you have no personal experience of teaching even just playing and being around these children would mean the world to them. Professionals are also more than welcome to participate, as the orphanage is constantly in demand for teachers or nurses with a background in medical care.
Schedule There is work at the orphanage from the morning hours up to the evening so we are dividing the duties between the volunteers. You may attend morning, mid day or evening shift.
Resources The orphanage have very basic recourses so the volunteers need to use imagination organizing playing, games, singing etc.

[edit] The Excellent Academy - Nursery School
Project Summary The Excellent Academy is found on the outskirts of Stone Town approximately 3 miles from the town centre; involving a 10 minute walk from the volunteer house followed by a 20 minute bus journey. The nursery school is rather new, having only been established in early 2008 however, with the Director who has taught English for many years the school is founded on a great deal of experience. Volunteering at The Excellent Academy provides more personal opportunities as there are only 40 students between 2 classes, with 2 full-time teachers already in each class. The students are generally an average of 3 years of age. With newly built classes this nursery school is a very nice environment to work in.
Activities Kiswahili, maths, science, English, and sports are all taught to the students. Volunteers are specifically needed to teach English at the nursery school but will be more than welcome to assist in any of the other subjects or activities. It’s often a good idea to become creative when planning lessons, as this is something that tends to lack in most education in both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. Schedule Mwanakwerekwe ‘C’ School beings its school day in the morning at 7am to12.50pm and then carries on in the afternoon from 11am to 5.55pm Holidays: The school will be closed in the months of September and December.
Resources Mwanakwerekwe ‘C’ School has a good number of comfortably sized classrooms with wall length chalkboards. Laboratory apparatus is also requested, as are any resources and learning tools that could be helpful in accordance with the I.C.T lessons.
Special Points The children attending are mainly Muslim at Mwanakwerekwe. We ask volunteers to respect a more professional dress code on Zanzibar due to the large Muslim population. This is a rather large project and would be able to take up to 20 volunteers.
